But what if I like Pie?
Growing up I remember there always being a fresh baked pie on the kitchen counter. My grandmother lived with us and she was a fabulous baker. Fruity fillings, homemade dough and fancy crust, it was her thing. There was something so comforting about walking in the door after a long grueling day of grade 6 to the smell of freshly baked pie. I remember her letting me roll out the dough and how heavy the rolling pin felt in my hands. I loved how she could work the dough in her hands with such ease. I told myself then and there, that when I grew up I was going to bake a pie for my family every week.
There was something so comforting about walking in the door after a long grueling day of grade 6 to the smell of freshly baked pie.
Then I grew up, 4 kids, a dog, skating, karate, music, swimming and so on and so on. I am about 600 or so pies behind. I have often thought about the pre-made pies available but I try really hard to ensure balanced and healthy dinners for my family. I felt the ‘pre-made’ option would kibosh my whole healthy eating plan. I decided to try McCain’s Deep ‘n Delicious fruit pies, not going to lie, I was a little skeptical, then I read the ingredients. Their blueberry pie has 7 ingredients and I can pronounce and spell all of them. In fact I have all them in my pantry right now. I checked another frozen pie crust, the crust alone had 8 ingredients and I could not pronounce 5 of them. Made with real ingredients…CHECK!
But how would they taste? Would the whole “real ingredients” thing be to good to be true? If the smell in my house after 40 minutes in the oven was any indication, these pies were going to be FABOOSH. I wish I could bottle that smell. McCains dessert pies were far better than I ever expected. The best part was that they were not crazy sweet like most prepared desserts are. I checked the ingredients again and sugar was listed 5 out 7. Great taste…CHECK! McCains dessert cakes are 2 for 2. Can you say MIND BLOWN.
The only thing I missed about this whole pie experience was being able to write my name in the thin layer of flour that used to cover our kitchen after one of my grandmothers baking sessions. What I didn’t miss…and didn’t have time for…was cleaning that layer up.
